Google Finance Beta
A new service from google portfolio! But this one has a few interesting
features, which make it different from other google services. If I
check the FAQ about google finance, following are some of the interesting points:
1. It is a mix of 2 types of information: licensed financial content and
crawled web data. Most of google services so far have been powered by content
which is not edited or screened in any way. It has been the job of
pagerank algorithm which dispenses 'blind justice' to the sea of web content.
2. Discussion groups will have some kind of moderation. So it is not a
completely 'unwatched' service. But google FAQ mentions that it is mainly
to keep away unwanted or undesirable content.
3. The Related Companies feature shows companies related to one the user
is interested in. The related companies could be connected in any way to
the searched company -- be it competitor, supplier, or acquirer. But the
interesting part is that this feature is powered through automated search,
no manually linked data here. Since automated search is what google does
well anyway, this could be a differentiator for google from others if
implemented well.
4. The other things like google portfolio are me too stuff, but then necessary
to make the whole service as a full package.
So what is interesting from this service is that it is not completely a
hands-off search/crawl kind of service. There is a combination of licensed
content, and automated search. So it remains to be seen if
the meeting of search and content will do create a new alchemy.
